Biography

Minna Laaksonen was born in 1990 near Helsinki, Finland. Minna began painting at the young age of 9 when she wanted to ‘capture’ the ‘spots’ and clouds in the sky in paintings.

Her parents, Italian mother and Finnish father encouraged Minna’s natural artistic tendencies.
Minna formally began to study painting in Finland. She then moved to England with her mother and continued to focus her studies in visual arts there. A photography enthusiast, Minna owns a wide archive of ‘spots’ and ‘shapes’ that she captured with her camera over the course of time. After years of studying and practicing various techniques, styles and mediums, including graffiti, mosaics, watercolors, oil and acrylics, Minna found the perfect style for her art by combinging photography and a graphic reprocessing along with her use of bright colors, full of life.
As a result, Minna’s artworks are POP conceptual paintings that are completely captivating to the viewer.
Minna’s artwork is a burst of colors and shapes which captivates and intrigues. Her canvases strike and impress. Her colors, shapes and create an ‘code’ of sorts which she personalizes through her interpretation of what she sees through her art making each painting unique and ‘alive’. There are no ‘rules’ or direction in the interpretation of Minna’s work, it is up to the viewer to interpret.
“I love photography and its possible manipulations. I love colors, light and shadows creating interesting shapes.
My first works were basically prints of photographs of mine, a reality changed in colors, things of ordinary usage we barely notice because too normal. I simply tried to make them more visible.
Then, by deepening my research, I created the embellished giclée by adding details: bottons, embroidery, where they have no connection to the subject (oranges), and then sand, glass colors able to make 3D spots, cement and hot glue, and golden and silver foil. A mixed media which manages to thicken my canvases and brings out some particulars of the subject.
The passage to the originals was spontaneous, with the awareness of interpreting color spots, where colors are totally different from reality.” Minna Laaksonen
